Advent is the four weeks leading up to Christmas where we take time to reflect on the birth of Jesus and look forward to His coming again. During each Sunday of the Advent season, we focus on one of the four virtues Jesus brings us: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Want more? Here are three ideas to help you celebrate advent with your family.
Pray as a Family Every Day
Take 24 strips of paper and have each family member write the name of a person or ministry they would like to pray for. Put the strips in a box or jar and pick one out each day. Pray together for the person or ministry on the paper. Or take the strips and make a paper chain to hang up in your house. Remove one link in the chain every day and pray as a family.
Make or Buy an Advent Jesse Tree
This ancient tradition, based on Isaiah 11:1, helps children learn the Christmas story through Scripture. Each day, read and discuss a passage of scripture and then place a related ornament on the tree. You can buy ready-made Jesse trees and ornaments, download templates, or make one yourself. Several reading plans and ornament ideas can be found online.
Read an Advent Devotional
Sit down as a family each day and read an advent devotional together. Find one you like online or at the bookstore. Or you can Follow us on Facebook for our daily verse and Christmas countdown beginning December 1!
